My Little Blue Dress

With small white, graphical pattern,

On a smooth, flowy, dark blue fabric,

Snugly falling over the curves,

With a slim, white belt on the waist,

Reaching just above my knees, my favourite

 Little Blue Dress, that was.

Wearing that, I wrapped myself with liberation,

And against all the reasons, so misplaced.

From those looks that teetered between,

A nod of approval and a visible smirk,

‘Oh! You look like the sister of your son’- Oft a comment passed by,

With compliment and sneer, both interlaced.

‘Thank you!’, I would say, and add with a smile,

‘But I am his mother first and I teach him,

That virtues are not the slaves of a dress,

And tell him, not to judge any with such haste!’

I tell him, it’s about the choices one makes,

To feel emancipated and to set free one’s soul,

For me, it may be the Little Blue Dress,

For some, something else might just be the best!

  1. This is another beautiful one from you …
Loved each and every word of it from the opening lines til the end …
Teaching the virtues to my son was the icing on the cake.
Thats what the modern moms n families need to do for a safer society.
Your thought process is indeed a cut above the rest .

    1. Hello Monisha, thank you for the kind words of appreciation. Yes, we do need to teach our boys to respect the choices of the opposite gender. How glad I am that you noticed that line!!! 😀 ‘My Little Blue Dress’ is also a metaphor and I feel each one of us have our own ‘little blue dress’ liberating us from internal barriers and many such things… while we deal with people all around us..who instantly judge us without even knowing us!

  2. True liberation comes from within n we have to respect ourselves first….Love your blue dress metaphor n the poetic flow of your thoughts…Yes indeed wish all mothers could teach their sons the way u do.

    1. Thank You Arti! You are absolutely right, true liberation indeed has to come from within. Thank you for appreciating the thought behind the poetry.
